With best holiday wishes, Notre Dame London Thesis researched at Notre Dame London is donated to the Collection Martin Kelly has donated a copy of his MA thesis G.K. Chesterton's commitment to Distributism: how realistic was it and is it? to Notre Dame London. This is the first work that has been completed by an external researcher using the G.K. Chesterton Collection at Notre Dame London as a resource. Martin's thesis will now live as a part of the Collection for future researchers to read and benefit from. The dissertation explores Chesterton's economic theory of Distributism and questions how realistic the theory is in modern society. Martin concludes that Distributism is "alive and well in other guises, such as the Cooperative Movement, Friendly Societies and hugely successful enterprises such as the Mondragon Corporation and the Scott-Bader Commonwealth." Martin says of the inspiration for his thesis, "I was first attracted to G.K.Chesterton by his wit. It was a revelation to me that he had also written on economics and that the model he and his friend Hilaire Belloc had come up with, Distributism, avoided both the pitfalls inherent in unbridled capitalism and in dead-hand socialism. Not only that, it was entirely consistent with, if not based upon, Catholic Social Teaching, the subject of my degree." Exploring the Collection was essential to Martin's research: "Searching original documents at the G.K. Chesterton Collection enabled me to catch the excitement of those who...dreamed of putting Distributism into practice." Martin believes his research is applicable to contemporary economic study as well as past theory. He writes that "Chesterton’s Distributism has much to teach politicians and others now about how to run an economy that puts humans at the centre. As Pope Francis reminds us, 'Money must serve, not rule.'" Martin would like to extend his thanks "to Notre Dame and to Alice Tyrell, keeper of the Chesterton Collection, in particular, for all their help." Text has been revised for clarity. Martin's thesis was advised by Rev. Dr. Ashley Beck at St. Mary's University, Twickenham. A Closer Look Spanish Language Translations Hadas Elber-Aviram's London Seminar class "On The Border Of Fairyland: Chesterton & London" made use of the Collection from a new angle this semester. As well as exploring the way that using physical copies of a text might inform literary research, the group took advantage of having a high proportion of native Spanish speakers to focus on the Spanish Language translations in the Collection. The volumes studied were published in Spain and South America between the mid-20th century and 2015, and are aimed at a wide range of markets. Hadas shared her reflections on the experience of exploring these texts with bilingual students: "Our work with Chesterton's translations highlighted the extent to which Chesterton's fictions are living texts that speak to us across linguistic, national, and cultural borders. It shined a spotlight on the ways in which translations have recontextualised, reframed, and reimagined Chesterton's stories, particularly within different cultures around crime fiction." Students' familiarity with the literary cultures of their home cities allowed for a fascinating discussion on the way language and storytelling changed in any given translation, depending on the country in which it originated. "We also explored the subtle changes of emphasis enabled by Spanish denotations and connotations," says Hadas. "Our student Silvana Mejia Aristizabal ('26) discovered that the translation of The Invisible Man lifted up the religious themes of the story by translating the English phrase 'carry large bags' into the Spanish idiom 'lleva a cuestas' that connotes the spiritual weight of sin as well as the physical weight of a dead body. She thereby unlocked new meaning in the Spanish translation through her sensitive cross-linguistic reading of Chesterton. "There is still much more work to be done on the translations," she continues, "and many more discoveries to be made. I look forward very much to the next cohort of Chesterton students bringing their rich linguistic fluencies to bear on them!" Call Out for Translators Translating the Collection As our cataloguing project continues apace, correctly recording the translations of Chesterton's works in languages with non-Latin alphabets are proving particularly challenging. Caso poi vuole che la Chesterton Library di Oxford, fondata tra gli altri dai nostri cari Aidan Mackey (fu lui a raccogliere per tutta la vita gli oggetti che la costituiscono) e Stratford Caldecott, sia stata acquisita proprio dalla Notre Dame University e da essa trasferita a Londra.

G. K. CHESTERTON NAMED LECTURER AT NOTRE DAME

News Service) Notre Dame, Ind., Feb. 19.—An announcement is authorized by officials of the University of Notre Dame that Gilbert Keith Chesterton, famous British journalist and author, has accepted an invitation extended by the University to give two courses of lectures at Notre Dame, beginning in mid-April and extending to June, at which time Mr. Chesterton will deliver the commencement address at the university. On this occasion an honorary LL. D. degree will be conferred upon him. The lecture courses, one in English Literature and the other in English History, are to be regular college courses leading to credits. Mr. Chesterton will be accompanied to Notre Dame by Mrs. Chesterton and his secretary. The Rev. Charles L. O’Donnell, C. S. C., president of the university, announced that Mr. Chesterton would make a special trip to Notre Damp under arrangements completed a year ago.

All'alba di ieri 4 Maggio 2024 è morto ad Oxford, Inghilterra, il nostro amatissimo amico Aidan Mackey.

Aidan è nato il 1 Ottobre 1922 ed ha dedicato quasi tutta la sua vita a far conoscere il lavoro ed il pensiero di Gilbert Keith Chesterton, per cui è non solo giusto ma doveroso definirlo il vero capo di tutti noi chestertoniani di tutto il mondo.

Ha tenuto accesa la fiamma del pensiero e dell'opera del Nostro Eroe quando tutti o quasi tutti l'avevano dimenticato, e per tener desta la Rivoluzione Eterna ha speso tempo, denaro, energie senza risparmio (editava e stampava un giornalino che parlava di Chesterton, di distributismo, di cattolicesimo... faceva tutto lui...). Lo ha fatto sapendo di lottare per la Causa di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo.

Ha avuto la ventura di conoscere e frequentare Dorothy Collins, la segretaria praticamente adottata dai coniugi Chesterton, e Ada Jones, la moglie di Cecil Chesterton, fratello di Gilbert.

Marito (rimase vedovo nel 2014 della sua amata moglie), padre di sette figlie, sergente della Royal Air Force durante la II Guerra Mondiale (trascorse quei cinque anni in Sierra Leone), maestro e direttore di scuole, sostenitore della nostra opera come di quella di tutti i chestertoniani a lui noti nel mondo (mi diceva sempre che era felicissimo di sapere che tutto quello che aveva fatto non era stato vano, visto che c'erano tanti bravi ragazzi in giro che seguivano Chesterton...), sovventore generoso ed entusiasta della Scuola Libera G. K. Chesterton di San Benedetto del Tronto, amante della liturgia tradizionale, frequentatore assiduo e devoto dell'Oratorio di Oxford, creatore e mentore della Chesterton Library (oggi Chesterton Collection, a Londra), abbiamo avuto la gioia di averlo come amico affettuoso, simpatico, arguto, infaticabile, inossidabile. Sospettavamo che fosse immortale...

Lo invitammo grazie a padre Spencer Howe nel giugno 2013 a stare con noi per alcuni giorni e raccontarci la sua vita di "merciless propagandist" chestertoniano per il Chesterton Day di quell'anno. Fu un'edizione memorabile perché Aidan ebbe l'occasione di rivedere un altro dei nostri eroi, John Kanu, il Leone della Sierra Leone, di cui divenne amico durante i tre anni di dottorato di quest'ultimo ad Oxford, e che continuò a sostenere a distanza (tanto che John e i suoi amici gli hanno dedicato un'aula della loro scuola a Freetown). John ha fatto tutto ciò che viene descritto da oltre dieci anni in questo blog anche grazie all'esempio e al sostegno di Aidan. Siamo contenti di aver assistito a questo incontro e di esserci inseriti in questa storia bellissima di amicizia cristiana.

Gli portammo nel 2018 una rappresentativa della Scuola Libera G. K. Chesterton di San Benedetto del Tronto e Aidan la introdusse nell'allora sede oxoniana della Chesterton Library (oggi Chesterton Collection, trasferita a Londra presso la Notre Dame University), facendo vivere a tutti momenti indimenticabili. Quante belle parole mi disse quel giorno! Fu entusiasta di vedere dei ragazzi italiani così giovani approdare alla corte di Chesterton. Lo riaccompagnai a casa in macchina e parlammo tanto.

Era anche un cultore di C. S. Lewis in quanto amico di Walter Hooper, esecutore testamentario del creatore di Narnia (che pur essendo più giovane di nove anni lo ha preceduto nel 2020...). Una sera l'estate scorsa chiamai Aidan e non mi rispose al telefono. Scrissi un po' preoccupato ad una delle figlie che mi rispose di non temere perché Aidan era andato a fare una presentazione a casa Lewis...

Aveva la fede e la freschezza di un giovane di venti anni.

Ci sentivamo sempre spesso per posta elettronica (che belle cose piene di fede, di arguzia e di simpatia che scriveva in un bellissimo inglese. Si firmava "Ancient Aidan"); negli ultimi mesi, per lui di maggiore sofferenza, ci siamo sentiti diverse volte anche per telefono. Aveva sempre parole di affetto, di stima, di conforto e di incitamento per noi e per le nostre piccole avventurose intraprese. Per me e per la mia famiglia è come se avessimo perso uno di noi. Ci siamo tanto affezionati a questo uomo splendido e ci mancherà molto.

Open House Festival 2023

For the first time we opened our building—and the GK Chesterton Collection—for London's Open House Festival. With the combined efforts of many staff volunteers, we were able to host guided tours looking at the history of Fischer Hall and the people and organisations who have called it home. The tour ended with an introduction to the G.K. Chesterton Collection, its new home with Notre Dame London, and a mini exhibition of key Collection items. Many of our guests had only a passing acquaintance with GKC, and left with a clearer sense of who he was—and in some cases, inspired to read more of his works. Open House also resulted in a number of follow up enquiries and visits, and has helped us raise greater awareness for the Collection. Dear Friends of the Chesterton Collection, Happy Autumn! Since our last newsletter, we have reached some major milestones in our Collection project work. We are happy to report that a selection of the toy theatre characters and sets are currently with a professional conservator, in the process of being stabilised and repaired. The rest of the toy theatre are being digitised at The British

Library, which enables us to both preserve these unique pieces of G.K. Chesterton's artwork and share them with a wider audience in the future. It has taken a great deal of work to reach this point, and we greatly look forward to being able to share the results in the future. Our cataloguing project continues with over 650 volumes now listed on our public catalogue. The works in translation have proved particularly challenging, but persistence, patience, and the judicious use of Google Translate has proved invaluable. In addition to groups of our own London-based students, we have welcomed visitors from as far as Australia, the Philippines, and the United States. We have provided resources and access to researchers working on Chesterton's perspectives on eugenics, distributionism, and his role as an apologist. We have hosted sessions for graduate students from the Institute for Human Ecology at CUA and undergraduates from the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Studies, whose week-long visit to the UK included a treasured opportunity to discuss Chesterton with Aidan Mackey as well as time with the Collection here in London.   We thank you for your continued support of the G.K. Chesterton Collection and the University of Notre Dame. Di seguito trovate un articolo uscito su The Observer, l'organo informativo dell'Università di Notre Dame; quest'ultima, come è noto, ha una sede anche a Londra al Global Gateway e qui si trova quella che ora si chiama Chesterton Collection e che una volta era la Chesterton Library, creata da Aidan Mackey e da Stratford Caldecott prima a Bedford e poi all'Oratorio di Oxford. I nostri lettori trovano molte notizie su Aidan e Stratford, due grandi che possiamo considerare con orgoglio ed affetto nostri cari grandi amici. Del primo abbiamo festeggiato il centesimo genetliaco lo scorso 1 ottobre a Oxford, del secondo ricordiamo la fine intelligenza di vero accademico pieno di genio e di umiltà, la grande amicizia nata con noi chestertoniani italiani (fu ospite del Chesterton Day nel 2012), la sua spinta verso il distributismo, cioè verso il dare consistenza e verità alle idee traducendole in fatti.

G. K. Chesterton: The Polymath, 28 ottobre 2022, Londra.

 

The inaugural Notre Dame London Chesterton Conference focuses on G.K. Chesterton as a man with an array of interests and gifts, and celebrates the dedication of the newly opened G.K. Chesterton Collection housed at the Notre Dame London Global Gateway.  Chesterton was a genuine polymath who wrote prolifically on philosophy, theology, Catholic social teaching, literary criticism, history, and more. He was a journalist, a writer of fiction and poetry, and was formally trained in the areas of art and design. Chesterton had a very specific connection to the University of Notre Dame in the USA: He was named a visiting professor and given an honorary degree at the home campus in South Bend, Indiana, in 1930.  This conference aims to look at the multifaceted nature of Chesterton's work through a series of panel discussions with academics from a diverse range of disciplines. Chesterton Collection, As the weather begins to turn the corner from spring into summer, we write to update you on the happenings around the Chesterton Collection here at the Notre Dame London Global Gateway. We're very excited to announce that we've received a $10,000 grant from ND Research, the office at Notre Dame that promotes and supports efforts to enhance research opportunities at Notre Dame. This generous gift will be used to restore and digitize Chesterton's Toy Theatre. We've engaged the British Library's digitization team to assist in the work. It's very exciting to join with them in this effort, and we foresee an ongoing relationship with them as we move to preserve and digitize more of the items in the Collection over time. Our long awaited and much anticipated Chesterton Conference will take place on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the Notre Dame London Global Gateway. We're excited to be welcoming several Chesterton scholars to gather and discuss their work on Chesterton, and the impact of this polymath on a whole array of fields. Chesterton Collection This semester, students taking Hadas Elber-Aviram’s London in the Literature of the Fantastic course were some of the first to interact with the G.K. Chesterton Collection at the Notre Dame London Global Gateway. Having previously read the Father Brown novels via digital copies, access to the original physical manuscripts allowed the students a fuller experience, gaining insight into the author’s thoughts and experiences while writing the text.  These students were among other classes: Literary Séance (Trish Bredar) and the Kennedy Scholars Research Seminar (Alice Tyrell and Charlotte Parkyn), who were also able to benefit from time spent with the collection! The Toy Theatre During childhood, Chesterton's father introduced him to a toy theatre, a play device he would use for the rest of his life. Well into his adult life, Chesterton would write plays for his toy theatre, creating the illustrated characters and scenery from cardboard. As well as putting on plays for his own pleasure, Chesterton would put on plays for the children of Battersea, and later for the children of Beaconsfield. The images above are of the Spanish Toy Theatre.
