G.K. Chesterton turns 150: Celebrating his life and legacy | Joseph Pearce su Aleteia.
Chesterton passionately argued the case for Catholicism even before his formal conversion. Here's a look at the man whose work continues to provoke and inspire.
To mark the 150th birthday of G.K. Chesterton, Aleteia is devoting much of today's coverage to the man who looms so large (both figuratively and physically!) in the cultural life of Catholicism in the English-speaking world and beyond. Our celebration kicks off with a tribute from Joseph Pearce, who wrote a delightful biography of the "prince of paradox."
One hundred and fifty years ago, on May 29, 1874, the great Catholic writer G.K. Chesterton was born. As a celebration of his life and legacy, let’s look at the story of his conversion to Catholicism and his influence on the Catholic Revival in the 20th century.
From the time of his publication of Orthodoxy in 1908, Chesterton was a tireless defender of the Catholic Church. In his novel The Man Who was Thursday, also published in 1908, the hero declares that “we are all Catholics now.” The hero of another of his novels, The Ball and the Cross, is a devout Catholic who argues the case for Catholicism unceasingly. It was not surprising, therefore, that most of his readers presumed that Chesterton was a Catholic. How could he not be, considering the Catholic perspective that pervaded all his work? And yet, surprisingly, Chesterton would not actually be received into the Church until 1922, 14 years after his declaration and defense of Catholic “orthodoxy.”

Merrie England: Hilaire Belloc in the South Country | Joseph Pearce su The Imaginative Conservative.
Little has changed in the years since Hilaire Belloc departed bodily from King’s Land. The ghost of his powerful absence still dwells in his stead, and the mill that he restored stands tall and erect, and in full working order.
The great hills of the South Country
They stand along the sea;
And it’s there walking in the high woods
That I could wish to be…
Hilaire Belloc was a great walker. He walked to Rome; he walked across the United States; he walked throughout France and Spain; he traversed the Pyrenees and the Alps; he ambled and rambled his way around England. As a follower of Belloc, the Pilgrim always feels, on his own rambles, that he is following in the footsteps of this master of prose, poetry, polemic, and perambulation. In his perambulatory poem, “The End of the Road,” Belloc “crawled and scrambled… ranged and rambled,” “plodded… hobbled… trudged and tramped” but never turned his face to home, till he had slaked his heart at Rome. Although the Pilgrim has slaked his heart at Rome he has never, as yet, walked there. The desire to follow Belloc on his “path to Rome” remains with the Pilgrim as a reminder of a desire unfulfilled. One day, God willing….

Book Review; G K Chesterton’s The Everlasting Man - Reviewed by Joseph Pearce - The Catholic Telegraph
Dale Ahlquist is the greatest living expert on the life and literary legacy of G.K. Chesterton and both the longtime President of the Society of Gilbert Keith Chesterton and founder of the Chesterton Schools Network. Thus, it was perfectly appropriate for Word on Fire to select Ahlquist to guide readers through this new edition of The Everlasting Man, arguably Chesterton’s greatest book.
This edition’s subtitle, “A Guide to G. K. Chesterton’s Masterpiece,” is a little misleading as it suggests that it’s a book about the “masterpiece,” not the masterpiece itself. In fact, this is an annotated new edition of Chesterton’s book, with an introduction, notes and commentary by Ahlquist.
The Everlasting Man, published in 1925, was Chesterton’s contribution to the controversy surrounding the publication of H. G. Wells’ Outline of History (1920). Wells’ approach, animated by philosophical materialism and scientistic progressivism, was to show humanity’s history as an inexorable ascent from the primitive to the civilized, the latter predicated on the shedding of religious superstition in favor of scientific and technological progress. The Everlasting Man is Chesterton’s riposte of Wells’ history.

Chesterton’s Love of Corpus Christi | Joseph Pearce su Crisis Magazine.
For Chesterton, belief in the Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament was the very touchstone of truth.
This year, the feast of Corpus Christi falls one day after the 150th anniversary of the birth of G.K. Chesterton. Coincidentally and providentially, Chesterton also died within the octave of Corpus Christi, on the Sunday after the traditional feast day, which is the date that it is celebrated in the Ordinary Form in the United States. And there is even the suggestion of an additional touch of divine or providential humor in the Introit for that day’s Mass, which was printed on Chesterton’s memorial card and seemed to connect his own “corpus” and especially its corpulence with his deliverance into the heavenly banquet:
The Lord became my protector and He brought me forth into a large place. He saved me because He was pleased with me. I will love thee O Lord my strength. The Lord is my firmament and my refuge and my deliverer.

https://uomovivo.blogspot.com/2024/05/un-aforisma-al-giorno-il-primo-incontro.html?m=1

The Grand Old Man of Chestertonia | di Joseph Pearce, su The Imaginative Conservative.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of G.K. Chesterton, an anniversary worth celebrating wherever goodness, truth, and beauty are valued. Sadly, however, this year has also seen the passing of two good men who were lifelong champions of Chesterton’s legacy.
In January, Father Ian Boyd, founder of the Chesterton Review, died at the ripe old age of eighty-eight. In 1974, as a young priest, he had founded the Chesterton Review on the centenary of Chesterton’s birth. He could not have expected that the Review would prove such an influential vehicle for the Chesterton revival during the following decades, nor could he have expected or imagined that the Reviewwould still be going strong fifty years later.
I met Father Boyd on a handful of occasions but cannot say that I knew him well. He was an affable acquaintance rather than a friend. By contrast, I am honoured to claim a long and lasting friendship with the other champion of Chesterton, Aidan Mackey, who died on May 4 at the even riper old age of 101.Such was Aidan’s self-effacing sense of humour that I can imagine him saying that he had not so much reached a ripe old age as an over-ripe old age. Indeed, way back in 2009, when interviewed by a journalist with the UK’s Catholic Herald, he had quipped that he was “87 and crumbling by the minute”. Destined to live for almost fifteen more years, we can all rejoice that this particular cookie took a very long time to crumble.

Demonizing Distributism by Association | di Joseph Pearce su The Imaginative Conservative.
Marco Sermarini

In a recent essay, Veronique de Rugy focuses her ire on Alexander Salter, author of a forthcoming book entitled “The Political Economy of Distributism.” She apparently seeks to discredit the book by discrediting its author as an admirer of the “antisemitic” Hilaire Belloc. This is really all too silly to be taken seriously
We live in a post-rational age which has rejected the pursuit of truth for the pursuit of power. In such an age, we no longer engage in rational dialogue but merely seek to defeat our opponent by whatever means are at our disposal. Take, for instance, an article published on May 5 in the National Review by Veronique de Rugy. It is clear that she does not know anything about distributism, which she mislabels “distributionism”. Yet this does not stop her from attacking it. Since she doesn’t know what it is and cannot therefore discuss its merits or flaws from anything but a perspective of ignorance, she seeks to demonize it by association. She stoops to conquer through the employment of the ad hominem attack, the rhetorical equivalent of stabbing someone in the back because you cannot face his arguments face to face.

Maurice Baring in the Shadow of the Chesterbelloc, un articolo di Joseph Pearce su Crisis Magazine.

were so much associated in the eyes of the reading public that they together became the butt of the caricaturist’s humor and the satirist’s wit. Most famously, George Bernard Shaw, in an article titled “The Chesterbelloc: A Lampoon,” likened them to two halves of “a very amusing pantomime elephant.” Max Beerbohm, a friend of both men, drew a famous caricature depicting Belloc and Chesterton seated at a table, each holding a tankard of foaming beer, with the former lecturing the latter on “the errors of Geneva.” The rumbustious joie de vivre captured by Beerbohm in this caricature captivated the public’s imagination to such a degree that H.G. Wells complained that “Chesterton and Belloc have surrounded Catholicism with a kind of boozy halo:’ George Orwell, in the satirical attack on the literati in the opening chapter of his novel Keep the Aspidistra Flying, went one step further than other humorists by bestowing an honorary ordination on the Chesterbelloc, describing “Father Hilaire Chestnut’s latest book of R.C. propaganda”.

42° Chesterton Conference | 27 - 29 Luglio 2023, Minneapolis, Stati Uniti d'America.

L'altro fratello di Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc | Joseph Pearce su The Imaginative Conservative.
In many respects, Hilaire Belloc can be seen as Chesterton’s other brother, with whom he neither argued nor quarreled. Such fraternal friendships are forged in faith and find their fulfilment in heaven. We can be sure, therefore, that, irrespective of their sins and weaknesses, they are now not merely brothers in arms but brothers in the arms of the Lord.
