L'ultimo "Our Note-book" firmato da Chesterton per l'Illustrated London News del 20 giugno 1936.

Iniziamo il mese di giugno 2026, il mese del novantesimo anniversario della morte di Chesterton, a colpi di cannone di un certo calibro. Almeno per me lo sono, cari amici.

GKC era morto da sei giorni quando apparve questo brevissimo fondo e, nelle pagine successive, il suo ultimo contributo alla rubrica che era stata sua per trentun anni. Nell'occasione fu riprodotto anche il primo contributo, pubblicato nel settembre 1905. Successivamente la rubrica fu tenuta da Arthur Bryant per cinquant'anni. Bryant spese per Chesterton parole meravigliose. Qui in quest'altro post trovate altre belle cose di Bryant e anche la sua fotografia (è sempre bello avere in mente le facce di chi parla quando si legge qualcosa, e qui ci sforziamo di aiutarvi in questo). Qui invece trovate la storia della rubrica Our Note Book. Prossimamente proveremo a farvi avere la traduzione dei due articoli, che mi sembra siano del tutto inediti nella lingua di Dante.

"G. K. C.": THE LATE GILBERT KEITH CHESTERTON, WRITER OF "OUR NOTE-BOOK" FOR THIRTY•ONE YEARS, ESSAYIST, NOVELIST, POET, DRAMATIST, CRITIC, AND PHILOSOPHER.

The death of Mr. Chesterton, which we and our readers have special cause to lament, is a great loss to English literature. On another page of this number appears the last of that inimitable series of articles which he had contributed. week by week, to our pages for nearly thirty-one years— wonderful record!

The first article—reprinted opposite his last-appeared in the number for September 30, 1905, and its beginning struck the characteristic note which he constantly maintained a humorous approach to serious subjects, a genius for paradox, and a logical method of exposing fallacies. Mr. Chesterton was born in 1874 at Kensington, and was educated at St. Paul's School. For a few months he studied art at the Slade School. In his time he played many literary parts and produced a vast output.

His works include essays, poems, historical and biographical studies, plays, novels, detective stories, and books of travel. Above all, he was among the foremost essayists of his time. His last volume in that vein— "As I Was Saying "has just appeared. Recently he completed his autobiography.

Durante quel periodo si cimentò in numerose attività letterarie e diede vita ad una vasta produzione.

Ha pubblicato queste due bellissime testimonianze che mi commuovono e che voglio condividere con voi, e il volantino del pellegrinaggio. Io ringrazio tanto Stuart di quello che fa, rinnovo l’invito a sostenerlo anche materialmente perché così lo sosterremo anche nell’altra sua opera, la Guild of Good Counsel, che salva i bambini dall’aborto e le mamme dall’orrido crimine.
