Chesterton Welcome Today is the 146th anniversary of Chesterton's birth, and we'd like to use this occasion to tell you how honored and privileged we are to be the new custodians of the Chesterton Collection, formerly housed at the Oxford Oratory.  As a Roman Catholic institution of higher learning, dedicated to serious academic research where faith and reason are equally valued, we are well aware of G.K. Chesterton’s position as the premier English Catholic intellectual of the 20th century. Moreover, Chesterton himself had a special connection to Notre Dame: he was named a visiting professor and given an honorary degree at our home campus in South Bend, Indiana in 1930.  While the formal opening of this Collection at our Central London location has been postponed, our hope is to provide the resources to invigorate Chesterton studies by encouraging individual researchers to use this collection alongside the British Library; additionally, we plan to offer regular public lectures and academic conferences to showcase recent work in this field.  We eagerly look forward to welcoming students, scholars, and Chesterton enthusiasts from around the world as soon as possible. Chesterton. After spending a semester following in the author's footsteps, he returned a year later to become the first researcher to access the Chesterton Collection in its new home at the Notre Dame London Global Gateway. News An update from the Collection Several months ago, we were working towards the opening of the G.K. Chesterton Collection at Notre Dame London Global Gateway. Even though progress in currently on hold, we are excited about eventually opening our doors to Chesterton researchers and enthusiasts. For now, here's a sneak preview into our building, and some of the materials in the Collection! A closer look For our first closer look into the Chesterton Collection, we're turning the spotlight on this Corona typewriter. The typewriter belonged to Dorothy Edith Collins, who became both Chesterton’s secretary and a surrogate daughter to Chesterton and his wife Frances. As typewriting was not an area in which the great author excelled, Chesterton would dictate at length to Dorothy.  A truly remarkable thing about Chesterton was his ability to do two mentally different things at the same time. He would often be writing something such as a private letter at the same time as he was dictating an article for, say, ‘The Illustrated London News’.
