Penso di farvi cosa gradita nel segnalarvi la voce "Gilbert Keith Chesterton" dell'Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, firmata da Bernard Bergonzi. Questa è la versione aggiornata nel 2011 ma c'è un collegamento per leggere anche quella precedente che data al 2006.

È sicuramente interessante e ben scritta ma non tutto mi sento di sottoscrivere, per esempio questo cenno al suo rapporto di amicizia con Belloc:

Chesterton tended to hero-worship Belloc and was strongly but not always fortunately influenced by him.

Non ho mai compreso perché Belloc venga dipinto come l'anima nera ed il provocatore del peggio di Chesterton; altrettanto ritengo di questo passaggio circa il trasferimento a Beaconsfield:

Eventually Frances Chesterton decided that her husband would be better off out of London and the temptations of Fleet Street, and in 1909 the Chestertons moved to Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.

La scelta Il giudizio di antisemitismo contenuto in questo passaggio:

Chesterton also absorbed from Belloc and from his brother the antisemitism which disfigures his work, though he lived long enough to be horrified by the antisemitic programme which Hitler started putting into effect in Germany after 1933.

è altrettanto infondato e ingeneroso e inaccurato: Chesterton fu lodato da ebrei, fu seguito a Beaconsfield dalla famiglia Solomon, fu amico per tutta la vita dei fratelli D'Avigdor e tanto altro. Altrettanto dicasi di quanto segue:

It is not surprising that his later writings show signs of fatigue; the use of paradox, originally so surprising and provocative, becomes repetitive and predictable, and he is given to setting up and then demolishing straw men. Even at its best his late prose can resemble a baroque sermon, spinning endless significance out of a simple truth. 

e anche del giudizio sull'influenza della sua conversione al cattolicesimo sulla sua opera:

As an eminent Roman Catholic layman, praised and honoured in the church, his writing was directed to defending and expounding Catholicism in all its aspects. As his critical Catholic admirer Christopher Hollis put it:

this robbed his writing of that power of surprise which was itself one of its main attractions. Of the early Chesterton one never knew what he was going to say. Of the later Chesterton one always knew what he was going to say.

Ritengo tutto ciò infondato: basterebbe leggere gli articoli frutto della trasmissioni radiofoniche sulla BBC (il nostro Radio Chesterton, pubblicato da Rubbettino su nostra richiesta e tradotto da Annalisa Teggi, ad oggi l'unica traduzione in assoluto, bellissimi pezzi) o quelli usciti con continuità sull'Illustrated London News per dire che questo giudizio è infondato.
