Al momento il processo sulle virtù eroiche di Gilbert Keith Chesterton non verrà aperto. Comunicato del Presidente della Società Chestertoniana Italiana.
Molti di noi hanno ormai avuto notizia del fatto che il Vescovo di Northampton, moms. Peter Doyle (vescovo del luogo dove il servo di Dio ha vissuto per buona parte della sua vita e dove è morto, e quindi competente per il diritto canonico a pronunciarsi in tal senso) ha deciso di non perseguire il processo sulle virtù eroiche di G.K. Chesterton.
Conoscevamo la notizia da qualche tempo perché ne era stato informato il nostro Dale Ahlquist, presidente della Society of G. K. Chesterton (la Società Chestertoniana americana), e successivamente Mons. Doyle ha rilasciato alcune interviste sull'argomento.
Il Vescovo di Northampton ha dato tre ragioni specifiche a cui erano già state date risposte specifiche ed in modo esauriente.
In una lettera che è stata letta durante la sessione di apertura della conferenza della Society of G. K. Chesterton che è in corso in queste ore a Kansas City, il vescovo ha scritto che "riconosce la bontà di Chesterton e la sua capacità di evangelizzare", ma che non può più sostenere la causa.
"Sono molto consapevole della devozione a GK Chesterton in molte parti del mondo e della sua influenza ispiratrice su così tante persone, e questo rende difficile comunicare la conclusione a cui sono giunto", ha detto il vescovo.
"Questa conclusione è che non sono in grado di promuovere la causa di GK Chesterton per tre motivi. In primo luogo, e soprattutto, non c'è un culto locale. In secondo luogo, non sono stato in grado di evincere un modello di spiritualità personale. E, in terzo luogo, anche tenendo conto del contesto dell'epoca di G K. Chesterton, la questione dell'antisemitismo è un vero ostacolo, soprattutto in questo momento nel Regno Unito".
L'"investigatore" della causa di Chesterton, il canonico John Udris, che conosco personalmente e con cui in questi anni sono stato in contatto anche per descrivere cosa stia creando in Italia l'influenza di Chesterton nelle vite di chi lo ama e lo segue, ha confermato il contenuto di questa decisione. "Non invidio il vescovo Peter che ha dovuto prendere una decisione con implicazioni così grandi", ha detto. Padre Udris è stato per diversi anni parroco della Chiesa di Santa Teresa del Bambino Gesù e dei Santi Giovanni Fisher e Tommaso Moro a Beaconsfield e conosce molto bene quanto esiba grande l'importanza della vita di Chesterton per tante persone in Inghilterra e nel mondo. Conosce bene anche le nostre opere. "Naturalmente è una delusione. Ma l'indagine è stata un privilegio enorme. Conoscere meglio Chesterton mi ha certamente cambiato definitivamente", ha concluso padre John.
Noi chestertoniani italiani collaboreremo con gli altri chestertoniani del mondo per rendere più evidente che le obiezioni non sono fondate e che Chesterton ha portato a Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo un numero impressionante di persone. Credo sia sufficiente guardare il nostro blog, o aprire internet per scoprire quante vite abbia cambiato Chesterton in Italia e in che misura le obiezioni possano essere fondate. E ancora di più, vedere come sono cambiate le vite di così tante persone in positivo.
Questo non significa che G.K. Chesterton non sarà mai canonizzato. Ci sono altre strade potenziali che stiamo esplorando assieme ai nostri amici chestertoniani di tutto il mondo, con i quali costruisco una rete buona di collaborazione ogni giorno anche in vostro nome. È buona cosa guardare anche la storia della canonizzazione del cardinale John Henry Newman, un altro grande inglese di grande aiuto in questi tempi difficili per la Chiesa.
I nostri fratelli americani hanno avuto una buona idea, quella di dimostrare la devozione a Chesterton accendendo una candela virtuale per la sua causa:
Chiedo a tutti i lettori del blog, ai soci ed ai nostri amici di fare altrettanto, anche per mostrare che noi chestertoniani siamo un cuor solo ed un'anima sola (è uno dei doni di Chesterton)!
L'altra cosa che vi chiedo di fare è quella di pregare con la preghiera che abbiamo tanto diffuso e incoraggiato, sia sul web che con la distribuzione di migliaia di immaginette (le immaginette possono essere richieste al nostro consueto indirizzo di posta elettronica, diffondetele!).
L'ultima è di recarci in pellegrinaggio sulla tomba di Chesterton e di farlo sapere anche a Beaconsfield! Vi daremo tutte le indicazioni possibili!

The process of Gilbert Keith Chesterton's heroic virtues will not be opened at the moment. Statement by the President of the Italian Chesterton Society.
Many of us have now heard that the Bishop of Northampton, Msgr. Peter Doyle (bishop of the place where the servant of God lived for most of his life and where he died, and therefore competent for the canonical right to pronounce himself in this regard) has decided not to pursue the process on the heroic virtues of G.K. Chesterton.
We had known about the news for some time because our friend Dale Ahlquist, president of the Society of G. K. Chesterton (the American Chestertonian Society), had been informed of it, and later Mgr. Doyle released some interviews on the subject.
The Bishop of Northampton gave three specific reasons for which specific and comprehensive answers had already been given.
In a letter that was read out at the opening session of the American GK Chesterton Society conference, the bishop wrote that he "recognise[d] Chesterton's goodness and his ability to evangelise" but could not support the Cause any further.
"I am very conscious of the devotion to GK Chesterton in many parts of the world and of his inspiring influence on so many people, and this makes it difficult to communicate the conclusion to which I have come," the bishop said.
"That conclusion is that I am unable to promote the cause of GK Chesterton for three reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, there is no local cult. Secondly, I have been unable to tease out a pattern of personal spirituality. And, thirdly, even allowing for the context of G K Chesterton's time, the issue of anti-Semitism is a real obstacle particularly at this time in the United Kingdom."
The investigator for Chesterton's Cause, Fr John Udris, whom I personally know and with whom I have been in contact in recent years also to describe what Chesterton's influence is creating in Italy in the lives of those who love him and follow him, has confirmed the content of this decision. "I don't envy Bishop Peter having to make a decision with such huge implications" he said. Father Udris was for several years pastor of the Church of St. Therese of the Child Jesus and Saints John Fisher and Thomas More in Beaconsfield and knows very well how much he exhibits the great importance of Chesterton's life for so many people in England and the world. He also knows our works well. ""Of course it's a disappointment. But the investigation was an enormous privilege. Getting to know Chesterton better has certainly changed me for good" concluded Father John.
We Italian Chestertonians will collaborate with the other Chestertonians in the world to make it more evident that the objections are not founded and that Chesterton has brought an impressive number of people to Our Lord Jesus Christ. I think it is enough to look at our blog, or open the internet to find out how many lives Chesterton has changed in Italy and to what extent the objections can be founded. And more, seeing the lives of so many people changed in positive.
This does not mean that G.K. Chesterton will never be canonized. There are other potential ways we are exploring with our Chestertonian friends around the world, with whom I build a good network of collaboration every day in your name as well. It is good to also look at the story of the canonization of Cardinal John Henry Newman, another great Englishman of great help in these difficult times for the Church.
Our American brothers had a good idea, that of demonstrating devotion to Chesterton by lighting a virtual candle for his cause:
I ask all the readers of the blog, the members and our friends to do the same, also to show that we Chestertonians are a heart and a soul (it is one of the gifts of Chesterton)!
The other thing I ask you to do is to pray with the prayer that we have so widely spread and encouraged, both on the web and with the distribution of thousands of images (the images can be requested at our usual e-mail address, spread them!).
The last one is to go on a pilgrimage to the tomb of Chesterton and to let Beaconsfield know too! We will give you all possible directions!
